The Chinese mobile giant Gionee is back with a bang. This time beating its own record by making a smartphone that is even thinner than Gionee’s last make, i.e. the S5.5. Weighing just 140 grams, the new Gionee Elife S5.1 is presently the thinnest smartphone in the world owing to its sleek and ultra thin design. The smartphone is just 5.1 mm thick. The name S5.1 has been derived from the phone’s thickness just like its predecessor. The smartphone also holds the Guiness world record for the slimmest phone.

The specifications that the Gionee Elife S5.1 carries are less than of its predecessor mainly because of its size. Clearly the looks and the slim design are the dominating factors in this device. The phone has been made of metal and glass. The edges have been kept curved for a better grip. The smartphone carries a high end look, but on the inside, it is more of a mid-range device.

Talking about the display, the new Gionee Elife S5.1 features a 4.8 inch AMOLED multi-touch screenwith a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, 320 pixels per inch density and 16 M true colors. The device has got a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex A7 CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset alongside 1 GB of RAM. The smartphone carries a 16 GB of memory on board. Sadly, the memory cannot be expanded further than this because there is no memory card slot in the phone. This comes as a big drawback because now almost all the brands provide memory expansion slots in their smartphones.

This smartphone boasts of an 8 MP primary camera with LED flash and a 5 MP front facing camera. Both the snappers are acceptable in a mid-range smartphone. The Gionee Elife S5.1 runs on Android v4.3 jelly bean under the Amigo 2 user interface. Gionee says that it has made a lot of improvements in its Amigo UI and with Amigo 2, things are definitely better.

The connectivity features of the phone include EDGE, GPRS, GPS with A-GPS, 3G, Bluetooth, MicroUSB v2.0, WI-fi 802.11 and 3.5 mm audio jack. It is not known if 4G will work with the Indian networks on this smartphone. A 2100mAh Li-Po battery is provided in the Gionee Elife S5.1 which will be sufficient to run the phone for a whole day on a single charging.

Some news reports available on the internet claim that the GioneeElife S5.1 is all set to launch in the third week of November 2014 in India.However, there is no official report about the same.The GioneeElife S5.1 will offer a tough competition to the other best selling Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC, LG, Micromax and others in the mid-budget segment.


Currently, there is no word about the price tag of GioneeElife S5.1. However, going by the specs and features, we can expect a price tag between Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 30,000 for this smartphone in India.
